Inguinal hernia & hydrocoele
About inguinal hernia & hydrocoele:
An inguinal hernia occurs when the intestines bulge through an opening in the abdomen wall. This type of hernia is located in the groin area and will usually be visible as a lump under the skin which can extend into the scrotum in boys. Inguinal hernias are more common in boys and premature babies. Inguinal hernias do not go away on its own by strapping or time. If the hernia gets stuck the bowel or testes(in boys) can lose its blood supply and it becomes a surgical emergency, which is common in younger children.
Hydrocoele is a collection of fluid around the testis in the scrotum. It can be due to fluid draining through the abdomen or due to trapped fluid around the testis.
Repair of inguinal hernia is a day stay operations and performed under a general anaesthetic. Further information about the condition, operation and postoperative care will be provided to you at your appointment.
