An umbilical hernia is an abnormal protrusion of fat or intestines through an opening through the abdominal muscles at the level of the belly button. It is normal in newborns and infants and majority resolve within 2 years of age. They rarely get stuck or cause problems when present in infancy. The operation involves closing the opening in the muscles with absorbable stitches and will give the umbilicus a near normal appearance.
